What is Coaching?

Life coaching, as defined by the International Coaching Federation, is about partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.

Coaching is about creating a space for personal exploration, reflection, and action. It’s not about prescribing a path, but instead, guiding you in uncovering the solutions that feel aligned with who you are and what you want from life.

Why people work with a Life Coach

There are countless reasons why individuals seek the guidance of a life coach, but at the heart of it, people are looking to create meaningful change. Some of the common reasons include:

  • Identifying clear goals and creating a vision for success

  • Breaking free from repeating patterns, limiting beliefs, fears, and negative self-talk

  • Increasing financial success

  • Achieving a healthy work/life balance

  • Communicating more effectively

  • Improving relationships

  • Building self-confidence

  • Discovering life purpose and passion

  • Gaining career advancement

  • Reaching fitness, weight loss, and nutritional goals

  • Launching a new business or growing an existing one

  • Navigating life transitions such as family changes, new relationships, aging, job shifts, identity exploration, grief, or relocation

What Life Coaching is Not

There are a lot of misconceptions about life coaching, so it’s important to clarify what it’s not:

  • Therapy: Therapy focuses on healing from past trauma, whereas life coaching looks forward, helping you create goals and move toward a fulfilling future.

  • Consulting: Consultants offer specific advice or solutions for particular problems. As a coach, I don’t give you instructions or "homework." Instead, I help you unlock your own insights, empowering you to achieve your own breakthroughs.

  • Mentoring: Mentors share their own life or career experiences as a guide. While I may share wisdom from my journey, my role is not to create a replica of my path, but to support you in finding yours.

  • Teaching: Teachers provide new knowledge and skills, while life coaches help you tap into the answers and resources that already exist within you.

  • Being a Best Friend: The coaching relationship is deeply personal, but it’s also professional. Unlike a friend or family member, I offer a neutral perspective, free from the emotional biases of personal relationships, allowing me to support you in ways those close to you may not be able to.
